Deadline for 2011-12 tax returns fast approaching

Taxpayers are running out of time to deliver their 2011-12 details as the deadline for online submissions approaches.

Indeed, those yet to send their Self Assessment tax return must do so by January 31st or face a series of penalties.

An immediate £100 fine will be issued for anyone missing the deadline, irrespective of whether there is any tax to pay, while penalties of £10 per day will be applied when the return is three months late.

And with further penalties applied at six months and 12 months, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is urging people to file their return as quickly as possible.

The department has also launched a series of adverts aimed at reminding people about the upcoming deadline.

Launching over the next few days, HMRC is calling on taxpayers to "find their inner peace" and submit their details as quickly as possible, touching on the relief people have when they complete their tax return.
