You may also need to consider your tax position if you or your partner received Child Benefit and either of you had adjusted net income of more than £60,000. If you are required to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) you will need to do so via self-assessment if you have not already arranged to pay it via a reduction to your personal tax code.

The deadline for completing a self-assessment tax return is 31st January after the tax year end, when completing this online. If you want to submit a paper tax return, the deadline is 31st October.

If you joined the MTD for income tax regime for the 2026/27 tax year, you won’t need to file a self-assessment tax return for 2026/27, because you will be required to file an end of year tax return through your MTD software solution instead. However, you will still need to file a self-assessment tax return for 2025/26 if you have not already done so.
