How do I check that I can claim my employees’ wages through the furloughing scheme?
In order to be eligible for the scheme as an employer you must have: created and started a PAYE payroll scheme on or before 19th March 2020; enrolled for PAYE online; a UK bank account.
Any entity with a UK payroll can apply, including businesses, charities, recruitment agencies and public authorities.
As an employer you will have to class your employees as ‘furloughed workers’ to be eligible for the scheme. A ‘furloughed worker’ is essentially a non-working employee who is retained on an employer’s payroll, rather than being made redundant.
To be classed as ‘furloughed’, the employee must not undertake any work for the employer (including working from home).To check the eligibility of an employee, HMRC has produced detailed guidance here.
