Royal wedding affects VAT return dates, HMRC warns

Date: 12th April 2011

Prince's wedding changes VAT return deadlineSmall business operating in various industries in the UK could be among those interested in a recent announcement regarding VAT returns.

With the forthcoming royal wedding marking an extra bank holiday in this calendar year, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has warned taxpayers that VAT returns must be filed early.

This could encourage a number of small enterprises to seek the assistance of a specialist accountancy firm in order to ensure their bookkeeping is up to date,

In usual circumstances, paper VAT returns are due to be filed by the last working day of the month.

However, with the 30th of April being a Saturday and the 29th seeing Prince William and Kate Middleton getting wed, returns must be filed by April 28th.

"Cheque payments must clear HM Revenue & Customs' account by the same date [and bear in mind that] cheques take three bank working days to clear," HMRC warned.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
