Tough stance on tax fraud highlighted by HMRC

Date: 22nd June 2011

HMRC highlights fight against tax fraudSmall businesses across the UK could be among those interested in recent comments regarding tax fraud.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has taken an opportunity to highlight its crackdown on fraudulent activity within the tax system.

The department has said that the new multi-million package awarded by the government shows that HMRC is serious in coming down hard on those attempting to operate outside the rules.

It comes as "self-styled Lord" Gregory Roberts attempted to defraud the system to the tune of over £6 million through bogus company tax, income tax and VAT returns.

Martin Brown, assistant director of criminal investigation for HMRC, commented: "HMRC will not stand by whilst fraudsters like this try to steal money from the public.

"We are cracking down on fraud and the government has made a further £917 million available to us to step up the fight against evasion, avoidance and attacks by criminal gangs."

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
