Taxation charter goes to second consultation

Date: 12th February 2009

The proposed taxation charter from HMRC has been given a second consultationThe proposed taxation charter has been given a second consultation, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has announced.

Under the plans, the principles of taxation responsibilities would be clearly outlined - which would protect both the rights of the department and taxpayers.

The Chartered Institute of Taxation has welcomed the news, as it believes taxpaying processes must be simplified.

President Nick Goulding said: "The charter will help taxpayers who are struggling with the complexity of the system.

"We do mot see this as a whole answer … but the charter can at least make it easier for the taxpayer to know what they need to do and what to expect from HMRC."

He added that one of the biggest principles which would likely be included in the document was the right to appeal assessments.

Earlier this month, HMRC revealed that close to six million businesses and individuals had filed their self-assessment tax returns online.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
