Tax code guidance issued by HMRC

Date: 15th March 2010

HMRC issues guidance over bungled codesTaxpayers have been advised to keep in contact with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) should they be affected by errors with the department's new National Insurance and PAYE Service (NPS).

HMRC has recently published guidance in its website in light of the errors, which could see a number of taxpayers overpaying as a result of incorrect tax codes being issued.

A statement on the HMRC website, said: "You should check your tax code using the guidance included with the Coding Notice and on our website.

"If you think that it may be incorrect or if you do not understand an entry on it, please telephone us on the number printed on your Coding Notice or 0845 3000 627."

The errors appeared during a transition period, which saw HMRC transfer a large number of tax records on to the new NPS system.

Those who have been sent incorrect information have been urged to contact HMRC in order to ensure they do not pay too much tax from April 6th this year.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
