Small business owner fined £80k for tax fraud

Date: 2nd September 2008

The owner of a small business in west Yorkshire has been given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to taxation fraud.

According to the local Mirfield Reporter, Katherine Chambers owns the town's golf range and a nearby stables and caravan park.

During the case at Bradford crown court, she admitted evading tax and national insurance payments. As well as the suspended prison sentence, she was fined £82,951.33.

It was revealed that Ms Chambers had taken over the running of the businesses after her partner died in a road accident in 1997.

When she was interviewed by officers from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in 2006, she admitted that she knew she should have acted to correct mistakes in the company's tax returns.

In her defence, her lawyer said that Ms Chambers had initially ignored her tax liability but had cooperated fully with the investigation.

On top of the fine and the suspended sentence, judge Roger Ibbotson ordered her to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
