Scotland to have greater financial accountability, says Calman

Date: 15th June 2009

The Scottish parliament may have increased tax powersThe Commission of Scottish Devolution, an independent review of the experience of devolution in Scotland, is to release its findings today (June 15th) in Edinburgh.

The report, composed by the Culman commission, is expected to suggest the Scottish parliament take on increased responsibility in a number of fields, including tax.

Sir Kenneth Culman, head of the commission, said: "I believe that what we have come up with is a strong package.

"It includes important recommendations about improving the financial accountability of the Scottish Parliament [and] adjusting the distribution of powers and functions."

It is expected that the Scottish Parliament will be given greater control over income tax as well as a number of other taxes.

The event will take place at Our Dynamic Earth, near the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, with the report published on the commission's website this morning.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
