Road users would welcome flexible car taxation

Date: 16th October 2008

Over half of the UK's road users would welcome a flexible system of taxation for motoring, a poll has revealed.

According to the Institute of Civil Engineers' (ICE) research - which has been published to coincide with its Station of the Nation Transport report - 60 per cent of the population would welcome such a system.

The ICE believes that dynamic taxation based on how often a vehicle is used would not only be fairer than fixed car tax, but would also help the environment.

The chair of ICE's transport board, Alan Stilwell, commented: "The results of this poll are very interesting as it demonstrates the public's willingness to consider new options to combating congestion and climate change."

He added that a further investigation was needed into how future drivers could pay less for their car, but more for their journey.

The survey also discovered that 86 per cent of people believe that funds generated from car tax should be put into improving public transport.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
