REC urges government action on taxation

Date: 18th August 2010

The coalition government has been in power for 100 daysThe Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has urged the government to act on its promises regarding taxation and other regulations affecting jobs.

Following the first 100 days of the coalition government's time in office, the REC has said it has welcomed some of its policies, such as the review into IR35 legislation.

However, it has also said that the administration must follow up these policies with concrete actions to help businesses and boost employment.

"The rhetoric about less bureaucracy sounds great but we have yet to see much action," said REC chief executive Kevin Green.

"The reviews announced in relation to pensions reform, the Vetting and Barring Scheme and IR35 are all welcome. However, it is the outcomes of these reviews that will really matter."

He added that the REC would continue to seek input in government decisions and earlier this year held a meeting with employment relations minister Ed Davey.

Introduced in 2000, IR35 aims to eliminate the avoidance of tax and National Insurance Contributions through the use of intermediaries.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
