New Tax Matters scheme to improve education in schools

Date: 3rd September 2009

The modules are available to teachers onlineTax education in UK schools could be improved due to a new initiative from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

The online resource, Tax Matters, is aimed at PSHE and business studies teachers who want to broaden students' knowledge on the subject at Key Stages 3 and 4.

Lesson plans, interactive games and quizzes are all included in the modules, which are available for free.

Subjects covered include the National Insurance system, the various income tax bands and how taxation affects society as a whole.

Commenting on the course, Caroline Smith at HMRC said: "By the end of the modules, students will be well equipped to understand what tax is all about.

"They'll be clear why we pay tax in the first place, and what it means for them on a practical level, such as why it's important to keep hold of their National Insurance number and how to understand their tax code."

Tax Matters was developed with the support of the Personal Finance Education Group.

Teachers were also involved in the formulation of the modules.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
