LITRG issues guidance on tax refund claims

Date: 8th June 2010

LITRG issues tax refund adviceBritons who believe they may have paid too much tax or are unsure about how to claim a refund from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) could be among those to benefit from new advice.

The Low Income Tax Reform Group (LITRG) has published new guidance explaining how those who have overpaid their tax can go about recouping the money.

Those who believe they are entitled to a refund have been urged to write a letter to HMRC stating their name, address, National Insurance (NI) number and as much information about their employment history as possible.

Evidence, such as P45 and P46 forms, should also be included as well as a note explaining why a refund is felt necessary.

"Whilst HMRC say they usually aim to process PAYE [pay-as-you-earn] repayments within four weeks of receipt, this year there are likely to be further delays while the new NI and PAYE service beds in. In some cases, HMRC will need to carry out security checks," the LITRG explained.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
