HMRC to target tutors and coaches

Date: 11th October 2011

HMRC announces tax clampdown Britons working as tutors or coaches in the UK could be tempted to seek the advice of a specialist accountancy service following a recent government announcement.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has announced the launch of a new campaign aimed at reducing the undeclared tax liabilities of such workers.

Under the Tax Catch Up Plan, individuals providing private lessons will be chased for unpaid taxes regardless of whether or not they have a registered teaching qualification.

HMRC explained that affected parties that come forward before March 31st next year will benefit from a reduced penalty of 20 per cent, while those that have to be chased will face "much higher penalties".

Marian Wilson, head of HMRC campaigns, said: "Our campaigns are designed to ensure tax is paid so that the money is available to spend on public services used by everyone.

"We are making it as easy as possible for people offering tuition and coaching to use this unique opportunity to put their tax affairs in order by making a full disclosure, and benefit from the best possible terms."

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
