HMRC to launch new tax crackdowns

Date: 9th February 2012

HMRC announces new tax crackdownHM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is preparing to launch a number of new campaigns aimed at improving tax compliance in the UK.

The department has announced that one of the new campaigns will aim to crack down on those failing to make tax returns.

Those who are liable to pay tax at the highest rate will come under particular scrutiny, HMRC warned.

Further campaigns will focus on those working in the home improvement market and those who make money buying and selling goods directly to others.

Marian Wilson, of HMRC Risk and Intelligence, said that as most people pay their taxes in full and on time, it is only right that the department works hard to secure payment from those who do not.

"Using new technology, we have been able to analyse returns to HMRC covering a range of taxes and to cross-reference these with other information to build a picture of where we believe we have taxpayers with missing returns," she commented.

"We will use the same technology to analyse information gathered to support the following two campaigns and for each campaign, after the opportunity has closed, we will use the information we have to pursue those who choose not to use the chances we provide to put their affairs in order."

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
