HMRC issues reminder for tax agent proposals

Date: 4th February 2010

Taxpayers have just one month left to respond to HMRCHM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has issued a reminder to taxpayers who may be interested in airing their views working with tax agents.

The department's consolation, which looks at ways in which tackling tax agents who partake in "deliberate wrongdoning" can be modernised, is set to close at the end of the month giving taxpayers just a few weeks left to respond.

Dave Hartnett, HMRC permanent secretary for tax, said: "We think there is a clear case for powers that are carefully focused on the small minority of agents whose approach to their work brings the profession as a whole into disrepute.

"If taxpayers are to get the standard of service they deserve we have to work with agents in an open and positive atmosphere. This consultation is about achieving that. We are interested to hear your views."

The report is also seeking views on how to disclose information members who demonstrate unprofessional work habits and poor technique.

Taxpayers have until March 3rd to respond to the consolation, which launched on December 9th last year.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
