Tax return 'dos and don'ts' issued

Date: 28th January 2008

Individuals and small businesses have been given some useful advice ahead of Thursday's tax return deadline.

With all returns needing to be at HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) by January 31st, the Times has issued a list of 'dos' and 'don'ts' designed to guide people through the process and ensure that they complete their documents on time.

Things to do include making sure that all the information is in place before beginning, double checking the form for errors, keeping a photocopy of the document and explaining any significant differences between this year's tax return and the previous one.

In addition, people are advised to phone their local tax office if they need any help, while the self assessment tax return helpline is available on evenings and weekends.

Top of the list of 'don'ts' is not leaving it until the last minute and making sure that each section of the form is completed. The finished document must be signed and dated before filing.

"Failing to complete your tax return accurately could cost you both time and money," the Times states.

The standard HMRC penalty for a late tax return is £100.

Refund Of Reclaimed VAT

Q: Last year we refurbished the kitchen in a small café business we run and reclaimed the VAT on the work done. The business has now decreased to an extent where we can deregister for VAT. If we deregister will we have to refund the VAT claimed on the refurbishment?
