Strathie takes helm at Revenue and Customs

Date: 14th October 2008

A new chief executive has been appointed to lead the work of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), it was announced yesterday (October 13th).

The role will be taken on by Lesley Strathie, who is currently the chief executive of Jobcentre Plus and a permanent secretary with the Department of Work and Pensions.

Ms Strathie's appointment has been approved by both the prime minister and the chancellor of the exchequer, and she will take up her new role at Whitehall at the start of November.

Chancellor Alistair Darling commented: "The chief executive role at HMRC is one of the biggest delivery jobs in government and Lesley Strathie is very experienced in delivering quality customer services."

Mike Clasper, the current chairman of HMRC, also welcomed the appointment, praising Ms Strathie as "an inspirational leader … [with] an excellent track record".

Small businesses have until October 31st to submit a self-assessment tax return to HMRC, or if filing online, have up to January 31st, 2009.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
