Self-assessment tax return deadline nears

Date: 5th January 2009

The deadline for self-assessment tax returns will soon be hereThe deadline for completed self-assessment tax returns is fast-approaching, the government has advised.

A timely reminder has been issued by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), informing those it concerns that the final deadline for submissions is January 31st.

All returns must now be made online using the department's website, and businesses which fail to submit by the end of the month face a £100 penalty.

Stephen Banyard, a spokesman for HMRC, commented: "Don't forget - if you are filing your return in January, you need to do it online.

"It's quick, secure and convenient, and if you have not filed online before there is plenty of help and support available."

January 31st is also the last date by which any taxation owed must be paid to the government.

Self-employed individuals or business managers looking for advice on completing a self-assessment tax return should consider consulting their local accountant.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
