Newspaper publishes tax returns reminder

Date: 15th September 2008

One of the UK's leading daily newspapers has published a new set of hints and tips for tax returns.

The Independent's Beginner's Guide To: Tax Returns is a timely reminder that HM Revenue and Customs' (HMRC) final deadline for receiving returns is January 31st 2009.

Those yet to complete their tax returns are advised to either download a paper form from the HMRC website and send it in the post, or to complete and file their return online.

James Daley, writing in the Independent, said: "Paper tax returns, for the tax year that ended in April, must be received by October 31st. If you owe tax under £2,000 and want HMRC to collect it through your tax code, then you'll need to file by December 30th.

"The final deadline for receiving returns - and the deadline for paying your tax for 07/08 - is January 31st."

The newspaper also warns that if you have not paid by February 28th, you will automatically be fined five per cent of your tax bill.

In other news, accountants on Friday (September 12th) called for green tax breaks in the UK.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
