Lib Dems call for close in 'tax loopholes'

Date: 9th October 2008

The government must act to close the loopholes in the tax system which benefit only the wealthy, the Liberal Democrats have stated.

The party's leader, Nick Clegg, believes that the prime minister should be doing more to help poorer families cope with inflation and rising living costs.

Mr Clegg and his party also welcomed the banking rescue package announced by chancellor Alistair Darling yesterday morning.

Speaking during prime minister's questions yesterday (October 8th), Mr Clegg said: "The prime minister said, rightly, that this is a time for new thinking and not for old dogma.

"Will he act to close the numerous loopholes in the tax system which only benefit the very wealthy and use that money to cut taxes for people … who need that money most?"

Mr Brown responded that the government would take action in closing "tax loopholes", as it had been doing so in the last nine years.

Those filing a paper self-assessment tax return have until the end of this month to do so, or alternatively can submit their return to HM Revenue and Customs online.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
