January 31st deadline highlighted by HMRC

Date: 2nd December 2009

Customers have two months to register and fileA reminder on the upcoming online self-assessment tax returns deadline has been issued by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

The taxation authority is urging customers to submit their 2008/09 tax returns by January 31st or face a £100 fine.

People who missed the paper return deadline of October 31st have the opportunity to file online in order to avoid the penalty.

HMRC also pointed out that taxpayers needed to complete a registration if they have not filed online before.

This process involves visiting the authority's website, filling in a form and receiving an individual activation code.

Sarah Walker, an HMRC spokeswoman, said: "If you haven't yet sent us your 2008-09 tax return, don't forget, it must be sent online before 31 January.

"If you haven't filed online before, make sure you allow plenty of time to complete the registration process - that way, you'll avoid a last-minute rush at the end of January."

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
