Increasing number of Brits file tax returns on Xmas Day

Date: 6th January 2011

Brits filed online tax returns on Christmas DayA number of Britons interrupted their Christmas celebrations to file their online self-assessment tax returns, a new report has shown.

According to recently-published figures from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), 854 people went online to file their return on Christmas Day.

This represented an increase on the 612 reported to have done so in 2009. Such a rise could be attributed to taxpayers wanting to avoid punishment for late filing.

With the deadline set for January 31st, a number of taxpayers could be encouraged to seek advice from a specialist tax accountancy service to ensure all their affairs are in order in plenty of time.

Those who miss the deadline will be automatically given a £100 penalty and could also face the prospect of further charges on top of the amount of tax owed.

Figures from the report also showed that 2,408 signed into HMRC online service to file their returns on Boxing Day.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
