HMRC urges employers to 'beat May deadline'

Date: 30th April 2008

HM Revenue and Customs has today urged employers to ensure that PAYE end-of-year returns are filed on time.

Those who submit returns after May 19th could face penalties and are advised to file their returns as soon as possible.

Business owners with fewer than 50 employees are being offered £100 tax-free to file returns online.

However, those who decide to avail of HMRC's electronic services are advised to register immediately, as it can take up to a week for an activation pin to be sent out.

Anyone unsure of how to file their end-of-year returns are advised to seek the advice of an accountant or payroll bureau.

According to the government, around 1.8 million employers are "required to inform HMRC of their employees' tax and national insurance payments for the last financial year".

Further guidance can be found on HMRC's website, where podcasts are available on a number of topics including self-assessments and child trust funds.
