HMRC toolkits to drive down tax return errors

Small business owners operating throughout the UK could be among those to benefit from the launch of new tax return resources.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has made three new toolkits available to tax agents ahead of this month's tax return deadline.

With the October 31st deadline fast approaching, HMRC has issued the guidance in order to minimise human error numbers on returns covering VAT Input Tax, Inheritance Tax and Expenses and Benefits from Employment.

Brian Redford, deputy director of HMRC's Business Customer Unit, said: "Interest in the six toolkits we issued earlier this year has been tremendous – over 21,000 downloads in the first three months alone.

"The toolkits are free and cover areas of tax which we know represent a risk of error for agents. The toolkits are entirely voluntary but they are easy to use and have been designed with the help of the agent community."

Taxpayers have until midnight on deadline day to file their tax returns or risk being issued a £100 penalty charge.
