HMRC reminder could help Brits avoid tax headache

Date: 17th January 2011

File now to avoid tax headache, says HMRCHM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has moved to make sure British taxpayers are in no doubt about the importance of filing their tax returns online.

The deadline for submission will pass on January 31st and HMRC has urged taxpayers to be prepared or face a £100 fine.

According to the department, those struggling to get their affairs in order would be best off seeking the advice of a specialist tax adviser or calling HMRC for help.

"Any outstanding 2009-10 returns must be filed online by January 31st 2011. If you submit your return after this date, you could receive a £100 late-filing penalty," the department explained.

Taxpayers have also been reminded that they need to leave plenty of time to register for online filing if they have not done so before.

"You'll be given a User ID and an Activation Code will be posted to you within seven working days – so register by January 21st to be sure of getting this by the end of January. Once you've activated the self-assessment service, you can file online," HMRC explained.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
