HMRC issues online tax reminder

Date: 4th January 2010

Self-assesment tax return deadline loomsTax planning should be at the top of self-employed workers and small businesses' agenda this month, according to HM Revenue and Customs.

The government department has issued a warning to those yet to file their self-assessment tax returns for the 2008-09 financial year that failure to do so could result in a £100 penalty charge.

HMRC has published reminder that the January 31st deadline for online filing is fast approaching.

Sarah Walker, a spokesperson for HMRC, said: "If you haven't yet sent in your 2008-09 tax return, you need to start thinking about it now.

"And if you haven't filed online before, allow plenty of time to complete the registration process - that way, you'll avoid a last-minute rush at the end of the month."

Online filing is the only option left for people still to fill out self assessment forms after the deadline for paper assessments passed on October 31st 2009.

HMRC also advised that those filing for the first time will be required to register for its online service.

Activation codes required for online filing can take up to seven working days to arrive in the post so HMRC has been urged people to register as soon as possible.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
