HMRC calls for tax returns to be filed on time

Date: 11th October 2010

HMRC calls for agents help in meeting deadlineHM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has called on tax agents working in the UK to help them increase the number of tax returns that are filed on time.

The call comes at a time when a number of individuals could be looking for assistance in getting their affairs in order in time for the October 31st deadline for self-assessment (SA) returns.

HMRC figures show that 87 per cent of the 2.4 million paper returns for 2009/10 were filed on time.

Stephen Banyard, director of the organisation's Business Customer Unit, said: "Agents are a key source of information for a large proportion of the SA filing population, so we would really welcome their help this year in getting those paper returns in on time.

The director also said there is more at stake for taxpayers than the £100 penalty they will receive for late filing.

"HMRC will also have longer to open an enquiry into their return. Not only that, but the tax affairs of persistent late-filers are more likely to be investigated than those who file on time. Therefore, filing on time really makes sense," he added.

Mr Banyard also urged taxpayers to file online, saying the faster processing means any money owed will be paid back at a faster rate.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
