Wi-Fi security risk for business start-ups

Date: 4th December 2008

A huge number of British business start-ups are at risk from security breaches to their Wi-Fi networks, new research has revealed.

An investigation by Napera Networks found that 70 per cent of small firms show medium to high security risks on their wireless infrastructure.

Figures from Napera also show that almost two-thirds of companies do not know the identity of every user on the network, while around half still do not have password encryption for their wireless internet.

Todd Hooper, chief executive of the company, said: "This data highlights why so many companies are struggling to control security on their networks despite having invested heavily in traditional security solutions."

He added that most small firms did not have the correct policies in place to secure their Wi-Fi networks from common threats and those that did typically lacked a way to enforce them.

According to the latest government data, the number of new business start-ups registering in the UK rose by three per cent in 2007.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
