Expert urges Brits to take entrepreneurial route

Date: 7th September 2011

Brits urged to set up a businessJobseekers around Britain are being urged to set up a business rather than spend prolonged periods in unemployment.

Denise Taylor, career psychologist with amazingpeople.co.uk, said that people trying to find employment could be better off using their skills and knowledge to go into business for themselves.

"What I say to my older clients is rather than try [to find work] for six months with a huge gap on their CV, if they have six months where they are [in business for themselves], this will look better," she commented.

The expert added that as young people tend to be more computer literate they could use these skills to their advantage.

"Think about anything you can do that will bring in some money, because there are different things you're going to learn from that."

Ms Taylor's comments follow the publication of a report by the Higher Education Statistics Agency, which showed that 28 per cent of graduates from 2007 took three-and-a-half years to find full-time employment.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
