HMRC used as internet scam cover

Date: 14th May 2010

Taxpayers targeted by internet scamSole traders and limited companies working in the UK could be among those to find themselves targeted by a new internet phishing scam.

A number of bogus e-mails claiming to be from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have surfaced, saying that taxpayers' are due a rebate and advising recipients to get in contact via a list of e-mail addresses.

However, HMRC has confirmed that people who are owed a tax refund will not be contacted by e-mail.

"HMRC would not inform customers of a tax rebate via email, or invite them to complete an online form to receive a rebate of tax," a spokesman said.

Earlier this month news provider Thisismoney.co.uk highlighted the HMRC scam as one of the top e-mail frauds for people to be aware of.

The e-mails, which carry the heading 'online notification' contain links to a convincing fraudulent website, where visitors will be asked to submit their personal banking details.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
