UK supermarkets announce price reductions

Date: 30th June 2008

As a consequence of the rising popularity of lower-price supermarkets in the UK, two leading names have announced measures to reduce prices.

With the growth of Aldi and Lidl in the UK, Asda over the weekend opted to reduce the cost of ten "staple items", bringing prices down to 50p, while Tesco has announced plans to reduce the price of 3,000 products as of today.

"Times are getting tough and people are feeling the pinch so we have reduced the price of these 10 staple items over the weekend," said a representative from Asda, a company established in 1965.

A representative from the National Consumer Council, added in a report by the BBC: "Whether these are headline-grabbing gimmicks or a longer-term trend, it is just too early to tell. We would urge retailers to keep offering healthier options at affordable prices."

Asda's range of staple produce included items such as bread and eggs.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
