UK businesses to get their say on spending plans

Date: 23rd August 2010

Government calls on UK to rate spending plansSmall business owners in the UK are set to be given a chance to voice their views on a number of ideas on how to reduce the UK's spending.

The coalition government has announced the launch of the second phase of its Spending Challenge.

Following the first phase, which called on businesses and individuals to state their money-saving ideas, the coalition has proceed a shortlist and asked UK workers to rate them.

The news has been welcomed by advice website ContractorCalculator, which said the initiative could provide a particular opportunity to sole traders to see the last of IR35.

Dave Chaplin, the organisation's chief executive officer, said contractors should voice their concerns about the controversial tax legislation, which features on the shortlist.

"Contractors can show government that in the ten years since it has been in force, IR35 has damaged UK PLC's competitiveness by unfairly regulating the flexible workforce," he said.

"I would urge all flexible workers to visit the Spending Challenge website, search for IR35 and make their feelings known."

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
