Some employees 'are incorrectly filing tax forms'

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has warned that some employees are incorrectly revealing their employer's details when they complete tax forms for their own affairs.

The government agency explained that the 64-8 form is used by employees who want to have their personal information sent to a nominated agent, such as an accountant.

However, HMRC warned that some people were not filling in the form correctly, with the result that "some individuals are incorrectly showing their employer's details when they complete a 64-8 for their own affairs".

As a result, HMRC reminded employees that they needed to complete the name box of the 64-8, but leave the business name box blank. They should also make sure they use their own address in the address box and their national insurance number and unique taxpayer reference.

However, those individuals filling out the form were told by HMRC to always leave the employer PAYE scheme, employer PAYE reference and accounts office reference sections blank.

A spokesperson from the organisation added: "This will help us to make sure we send information to the right person."
