Small firms strike 'economic gold' on 2012 Games

Small businesses are winning billions of pounds of contracts as a result of the London 2012 Olympics, it has been revealed.

New figures published by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) showed that more than 800 companies have won over £3.5 billion of work in the run-up to the Games.

What's more, more than two thirds of these are business start-ups and nearly 100 per cent of the work is to be carried out by UK firms.

John Armitt, chairman of the ODA, said: "London 2012 offers businesses of all sizes major opportunities in the current economic climate.

"These figures show that businesses from all over the UK are already winning 'economic gold' with millions of pounds worth of London 2012 work."

It is expected that the ODA an London Organising Committee will handover more than £6 billion of work before the Games commence.

In other news, HM Treasury has announced that the 2008 pre-budget report will be presented at 15:30 GMT on Monday, November 24th.
