Small businesses 'should get Olympics boost'

Date: 23rd January 2008

An industry figure has expressed hope that the 2012 Olympic games will bring major benefits for the UK's small business community.

Spokesperson for the Federation of Small Businesses Simon Briault said that his organisation was "quite excited" about the opportunities likely to be generated by the arrival of the world's premier sporting event in London.

"The Olympics offer a really good opportunity for small businesses to get involved, develop new business start-ups and come up with new business ideas," he commented.

However, Mr Briault also admitted that many small firms currently harbour a certain degree of "scepticism" towards the Olympics, as they believe that any new openings provided by the games are likely to be dominated by big business.

"The worry is that it will all go to the big companies and their supply chains," he explained.

In an attempt to prevent this from happening, the Olympic Delivery Authority has launched a new website called CompeteFor, which aims to encourage the involvement of small businesses in Olympic developments.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
