Small Business Week 2008 to champion UK firms

Date: 1st October 2008

This year's Small Business Week is set to champion the cause of Great Britain's small to medium enterprises (SMEs).

Running for five days from October 13th, the BT-organised event will draw together business experts, support services and managers, as well as government officials from both national and local tiers.

BT will also host a number of events on business accounting, flexible working and mentoring in partnership with groups such as the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC), Natwest and Business Link.

Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business, is confident that business start-ups will outlast the current economic situation.

He said: "It is a sector that continues to be dynamic and energising, but more than ever, we need to ensure the right resources and structures are in place to support small businesses during these more challenging times."

Director general of the BCC, David Frost, added that the event hoped to create opportunities for first-time entrepreneurs and enterprising individuals.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
