Selling online is 'cost-effective'

Date: 18th April 2008

Selling products and services online can be cost-effective for small businesses, it has been suggested.

John De Groot, managing director of StartupCo, says selling thorough a website is a good way to generate additional revenue "without taking up more of the owners time".

"For some small businesses, sales through a website can offer low-investment growth opportunity, with potentially a high return on that investment," he explains.

However, Mr De Groot says that business owners selling online must ensure that their site is secure, through the use of encryption systems and reputable service providers.

"There is sufficient good practice for small businesses not to be deterred by the prospect of buying and selling online," he adds.

The StartupCo was formed in 1982 to help promote entrepreneurship in the UK and offer guidance to potential business owners.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
