Innovative design 'essential' to downturn survival

Date: 23rd December 2008

Small businesses are increasingly turning to innovative design in a bid to beat the downturn, according to new research.

An investigation by the Design Council found that 54 per cent of companies are planning on making better use of creative resources to increase their competitiveness.

What's more, a number of firms are realising the potential of design, with a similar amount of businesses stating that it was "integral" to the UK's future performance as an economy.

Chief executive of the Design Council, David Kester, said: "Recession is no time to be battening down the hatches.

"It's the moment when design becomes absolutely critical to survival, growth and success - and it's great to see that there's a growing recognition of this within the business community."

Smaller firms - such as limited companies and partnerships - should also keep in mind that the online self-assessment tax return deadline falls on the January 31st.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
