HMRC to carry out more investigations

Date: 1st September 2010

HMRC to ramp up tax investigationsSmall business owners in the UK could be encouraged to seek the advice of a specialist tax accountancy service following recent news about HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

Abbey Tax has warned that the department is set to increase the number of tax investigations it carries out during the remainder of this year, industry news source ContractorUK reported.

The initiative, which has been dubbed "dash for cash", is intended to help the coalition government claw back some of the £158 billion gap in public finances.

David Marples, a group manager at Abbey Tax, told the news provider: "We expect the number of HMRC inquiries into small businesses to go on increasing over the coming months.

"The inspectors we have spoken to have told us they are being tasked to bring in as much money as possible, as quickly as possible."

According to the expert, HMRC will now increase its investigation of small firms and self-employed workers during the third and fourth quarters of 2010.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
