HMRC backs TV show

Date: 18th February 2010

HMRC has sponsored a new business show on FiveHM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has announced that it is to sponsor a new TV series.

The department is to sponsor Five's The Business Inspector, which it said will promote good record keeping among the UK's small businesses.

Viewers will be able to watch the show weekly from March 10th at 20:00.

Stephen Banyard, business customer unit director at HMRC, said: "We know that most small businesses want to get their tax right. But we also know too that failure to take reasonable care costs the Exchequer over £6bn a year, with a major cause being poor record keeping. We hope this series will raise awareness of the need for good record keeping.

"We also want small businesses to realise the benefits to them - such as improved cash flow - of taking better care of their records and paperwork."

The show's presenter Hilary Devey described the number of companies that "go bust" every year as a result of poor record keeping as "terrifying".

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
