Expert highlights benefits of social media

Date: 31st October 2011

Small firms issued social media adviceSmall businesses looking for ways to improve their online marketing could be among those interested in the recent comments of one expert.

Sophia Haynes, director of marketing and communications at the Internet Advertising Bureau, has said that in order to make the most of the medium, small enterprises should focus on a few core areas.

One of these areas is social media, a platform the expert said can be a cheap and direct way for firms to engage with their customers.

"I think you need to be very careful about the tone and using social too much, but if you can find a really nice angle and acquire an interest with the audience, you can really start to get people on board with your business," she explained.

The comments follow the recent launch of the Local Business Accelerator Scheme.

Backed by Dragon's Den star Deborah Meaden, the project has set aside £15 million to help mentor small businesses and pay for targeted advertising campaigns.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
