Businesses 'woefully served' by energy providers

Date: 16th April 2009

Energy providers have been slammed for their treatment of small businessesBritish energy providers have been slammed for their small business services as part of a damning new report.

An investigation by the regulatory body Ofgem concluded that utility firms should be banned from 'rolling over' contracts without the consent of small business managers.

Additionally, the government watchdog has proposed that suppliers disclose the full terms of agreements on the initial signing of a contract.

Alistair Buchanan, chief executive of Ofgem, commented: "Our investigation showed that small businesses are being woefully served by energy suppliers. This has to change.

"We anticipate that the package of measures we want to introduce will improve business customers' ability to engage effectively."

Small businesses that are looking to improve their cashflow, which could involve switching utility companies, should considering consulting their local accountant.

Earlier in April, an expert from the Business Link website suggested that a large number of enterprises were looking to save money on their energy bills.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
