Businesses urged to respond to weather changes

Date: 9th July 2010

Small businesses urged to react to weather changesBusinesses operating within the UK's retail sector can improve their chances of success by reacting quickly to changes in the weather.

This is the view of Richard Caines, senior retail analyst for market intelligence firm Mintel, who said adverse weather conditions do not have to have a negative impact on sales.

"An end to the hot weather doesn't necessarily mean an adverse effect on retail sales as if the weather is too hot more people will head for the beach or stay in their gardens rather than go shopping for general merchandise."

However, the expert suggested that food sellers will be hoping the hot weather continues as it will mean prolonged sales of barbecue and picnic foods, ice cream and summer clothing.

Mr Caines also voiced concerns about businesses that have leftover merchandise following England's exit from the World Cup.

"Stores that had too much World Cup merchandise will be disappointed by England's early exit as this stock will now have to be sold off cheap, which will hit margins," he added.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
