Businesses unaware of data issues

Date: 22nd November 2011

Small firms unaware of data issues, says expertA number of small businesses in the UK are at risk of losing sensitive data without even knowing.

That is according to Mark Dempster, associate of the Centre for Cyber Security, who said most companies do not realise they have a problem.

"They may be totally unaware that they have had a loss of data or that some part of their operations have been compromised and think that they are dealing with normal operational problems without asking why and how the problem came about in the first place," he explained.

Mr Dempster's comments could inspire a number of firms to improve their data systems in order to protect their reputation.

The expert added that market damage caused by a data loss can prove difficult to overcome.

Meanwhile, small businesses have been told that effective use of social media can help them build a stronger rapport with customers and enhance their promotional activity.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
