Businesses demand cut in 'regulatory burden'

Date: 29th January 2009

Small businesses - such as partnerships and ltd companies - have demanded a cut in regulatory burdenBritain's small businesses have demanded the government cut the regulatory burden they face, which has increased pressure during the downturn.

The British Chambers of Commerce claims that the total cost of unnecessary bureaucracy on small companies now stands at £66 billion and is severely impacting on the health of businesses struggling amid a recession.

Its comments come on the back of the publication of the Anderson Review, which has set out a number of new recommendations for reducing regulatory burden and improving competitiveness in UK commerce.

Director general of the chambers, David Frost, said: "For too long the government has abdicated responsibility on helping firms comply with new legislation.

"If the recommendations of this review are implemented, it will be a significant step towards reducing the burdens on businesses."

Small firms should also remember to complete their self-assessment tax returns in time for the January 31st deadline.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
