Some accountants 'putting clients' data in danger of theft'

Date: 25th July 2008

A new report has warned that some small business accountants are putting their client's data at risk by using out-of-date internet software.

The survey from IT support company Ulysses was seen by accountancyage.com and reportedly indicated that 45 per cent of accountants are in danger of suffering from data theft.

According to the research, many accountancy firms are using old web browsers, which is putting their clients' data at risk.

"If you don't keep your computer up-to-date it is easier for a piece of malicious software, known as malware, to install itself and transfer data from your computer over the web," Peter Turner, technical director at Ulysses, explained to the website.

"Managers of accountancy firms should stay aware of when browsers are being updated and take time to protect their company."

Recently, HM Customs & Revenue was reported to have left business information in a file on a park bench.

The BBC reported that HMRC later claimed that no information that could be used by fraudsters was contained in the dossier.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
