Workplace discrimination 'still prevalent'

Date: 7th May 2008

Discrimination is still an issue which affects many workplaces across the UK, according to the Employment lawyers Association (ELA).

Recent research conducted by the Employment Law Advisory Services found that almost three-quarters of employers would not hire someone if they thought they may fall pregnant within the first six months of starting the job.

ELA secretary Richard Linskell said: "Sex and race discrimination law has been in place now for over 30 years and whilst there has been significant progress over that time, there is also no doubt that there is still a lot of progress required."

However, Mr Linskell warns business owners that failure to treat women equally is against the law, as is failing to promote an employee due to pregnancy.

The ELA currently represents over 4,700 specialist employment lawyers across the UK.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
