Western managers 'falling behind' Chinese counterparts

Date: 24th June 2008

The mangers of western organisations are falling behind their Chinese counterparts, it has been claimed.

According to the findings of a study by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), an organisation established in 2001, managers in China outperform their western counterparts in terms of training and education, reports Personnel Today.

"Our report reveals a more sophisticated picture of Chinese managers. They see themselves as having a high regard for rules, customer focus and their impact on the environment," said Penny de Valk, chief executive of ILM.

"They value wisdom and knowledge and while willing to acknowledge weaknesses, are also determined to correct them."

Indeed, the organisation believes that the country's management population is - among other things - "highly ambitious" and "commercially astute".

Entitled The Global Management Challenge, the study involved the participation of a total of 327 managers from a number of different countries, including France and the UK.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
