Small firms undersell themselves, says expert

Date: 2nd September 2010

Businesses urged to maximise marketing potentialSmall businesses in the UK could use marketing more effectively to boost their enterprises, it has been claimed.

Observational marketing specialist Geoff Ramm, a speaker at this year's Sage World small business conference, said that a typical trait of small businesses is to "undersell" their company from a marketing perspective.

According to the expert, many firms are "let down" by their brand image.

"People do judge a book by its cover and we do judge a business on its proposal, how it's delivered and how it looks," he told AccoutingWeb.

"For example, if you're handing out rubbish-looking business card at events, what does that say about your business? Even when budgets are tight, it's crucial to ensure you have the best materials and maintain a professional image at all times."

The expert also said the businesses should endeavour to be "constantly visible", saying marketing and promotion is no longer something which can be considered once every quarter.

Over the past 10 years we believed that if we wanted outstanding service we should use traditional large accountancy firms. Oh how wrong we had been! We had been charged high fees without any real value being added to the business.
